Pumpkin Seed Extract

Pumpkin seed extract is a natural protein compound that is derived from pumpkin seeds. It is high in zinc and a whole host of other nutrients. Touting medicinal claims such as treating the prostrate and removal of tapeworms, pumpkin seed extracts have also been linked to more and more beauty treatments as well as hair loss remedies for baldness and thinning hair.

Pumpkin seeds are rich in essential fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins, and phytosterols. Phytosterols are natural plant based compounds that can lower cholesterol and have been known to reduce certain risks of cancer.

The results of scientific research has shown that using pumpkin seed extract may even prevent fine lines and can stimulate collagen in the skin. This discovery has made it a popular ingredient in face and body creams. This magical extract has also been shown to reduce the appearance of stretch marks, a nemesis to any woman who has had weight issues or been pregnant.

Traditionally, the Native Americans, in treating urinary dysfunction, used pumpkin seeds. Pumpkin seed extract helps the tissues in the pelvic floor muscles to strengthen, therefore causing greater control of the muscles that allow urine to flow. Urinary tract health is important in the relation to hair loss, you wouldn’t expect it to be, but water retention due to urinary distress can affect the way the hair grows. Pumpkin seed extract, or the oil that is derived from the seeds, is also believed to have a beneficial effect on a male body’s testosterone levels.

Water retention can cause a host of problems including hair loss. Excessive water retention can have an ill effect on the circulation of the blood in the extremities of the body and the head is such an extremity. When a lessened blood flow happens, the amount and virility of the blood that reaches the hair follicles is reduced. This causes the hair follicle to get less of the nutrients and vitamins it needs for proper functioning, and eventually it will stop producing hair altogether.

Androgen, a steroid compound, and also known as testosterone can drop in levels as we age, this is one of the most common cause of hair loss. Pumpkin seed extract can interact with these androgens and boost natural testosterone levels therefore promoting better hair growth.

Conclusion

Pumpkin seed extract is believed to be a DHT (Dihydrotestostrone) blocker. DHT is made when testosterone and androgen combine with an enzyme, the 5 alpha reductase and is a natural retardant to hair growth. DHT is widely reported as one main causes of hair loss. When DHT reaches a hair follicle, it can prevent proteins and other nourishment from reaching the follicle and sustaining its life cycle; therefore, pumpkin seed oil can help prevent DHT from laying waste to the hair. It is important to note however, that at this time, no clinical study exists regarding its potency to block DHT or its effectiveness in treating baldness and hair loss in general.
