Just the other day, while listening to talk radio (I know, I’m a prude!) an advertisement came on for a “new and exciting hair loss product”. Since hair loss product reviews are my Hobby I immediately focused my attention on what the Pitch Man had to say.
The sales technique was nothing new. Most of the claim was focused on preying on men’s insecurities of balding. They even had a woman’s voice dubbed in, explaining why she prefers a man with a thick full head of hair. She claims, “I like it because it gives my man confidence”. I don’t know about you, but I’ve met many people with low confidence and they are sporting a pretty thick mane!
Back on point; since there was nothing in the “pitch” that would help me make a decision on whether this hair loss product could actually work, I had to call up the company and see what they had to offer.
I must tell you the lady on the phone sounded very professional and was pleasant to talk to. She didn’t even start the conversation about hair loss, but focused more on ”connecting” with me.
When we finally got to the subject of hair loss, she asked me many questions about my condition. Oily or dry scalp, balding pattern, diet, how often I wash my hair, what products I use, etc.
My answers to each question were well-thought out. I told her that I had an oily scalp, typical horseshoe pattern, I mostly ate meat and potatoes, and I wash my hair once a day.
She then proceeded to let me know that their products didn’t work for all conditions, however, she had some good news for me. I happened to be an ideal candidate for their hair loss products. She was anxious to get my order!
I kindly stated that I would have to think about it, and of course the price dropped plus she was going to throw in a vibrating brush. Again, I passed and ensured her that I would call back.
Of course I’m no liar! I called back 10 minutes later but had a different sales lady on the phone. Again, she was nice, blah, blah, and blah. Finally, the question of my hair loss condition came up.
This time my answers were the opposite. Dry scalp, thinning all over, I was a vegetarian, and I wash my hair three times a week.
She then proceeded to let me know that their hair loss products don’t work for everyone, but guess what? She had some good news for me! My conditions were ideal for their hair loss products.
I must tell you, I wasn’t surprised by this scenario. However, I was disgusted that these types of businesses are allowed to freely take advantage of men’s insecurities. I’m not one to cry for regulation, but the hair loss industry should demand it!
